Meet the Artist

Hi, I’m Tammy.

Owner & artist

I’ve always had an interest in creating since I was a little girl, and art was my favorite subject all through school. I’ve been a primitive artist since about 2006, and I offer handmade primitives and a huge line of primitive patterns!

Our story

The story behind Rock River Stitches

Tammy's attic workspace: a sewing machine on a white worktable under a skylight, with a potted plant and a dress form
My work space, where it all begins and ends!

01 How it started

Creative artists run in the family.

I basically learned everything from my mom, who is very creative in sewing and quilting. She learned from her mom, my grandmother.

I opened my shop back in April of 2007 and it’s been nothing but rewarding from the very beginning. I have some of the best customers that frequent my shop! In 2014 I was honored to have Rock River Stitches chosen as a Featured Shop.

I love thinking up creations and bringing them to life. It gives me such a thrill when my customers take time to send me an email that they appreciate my work!

— Tammy

02 Where & how it’s made

Made by hand in Illinois, a small group at a time

“These do take time to create… I’m a one woman show and can only make a small group at a time.”

  1. Design. Every primitive starts as one of my own designs, made in my workspace where it all begins and ends.
  2. Fabric & cheesecloth. Pieces like my Ghost Kitties start as a fabric form, draped with many layers of stained and painted cheesecloth.
  3. Small batches. Finished pieces come in limited quantities, and restocks are announced on Instagram.
  4. Patterns. Want to make your own? My primitive sewing patterns are digital PDF downloads you can print at home.

03 What makes it special

Primitives made with heart

A family tradition

Sewing and quilting know-how passed down from my grandmother to my mom, and from my mom to me.

A one woman show

Every finished piece takes time to create, so they’re made a small group at a time.

Inspired by the seasons

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays to create for, and in summer gardening takes over. Nothing like seeing flowers and veggies grow right before your eyes!
